Bandung Lautan Api is a history of the people of Bandung who will always be remembered as 

patriotic acts of Bandung residents in maintaining their homeland. March 24, 1946 was the 

momentum when the people united to prevent allies and NICA (Netherlands Indies Civil 

Administration) from occupying Bandung.

Bandung lautan api is a strategy so that the allies cannot master Bandung. Meanwhile, the order to 

vacate the area was also a direct order from Prime Minister Sutan Sjahrir. This is part of the 

diplomatic effort with the allies for the sake of the safety of the republic.

Besides that, Colonel A.H. Nasution also got a telegram from General Sudirman to defend Bandung 

until the last drop of blood. In the midst of a difficult situation, A.H. Nasution had to make a tough 

decision.

In negotiations carried out by the Indonesian military, a decision was made that the people and 

soldiers would leave Bandung together by first burning it down.

After this decision, 100,000 Bandung residents (other sources wrote 200,000 and 300,000) vacated 

Bandung 11 km from the city center.

Afterwards, on July 10, 1946, Mohamad Toha set fire to a warehouse belonging to the NICA 

Priangan containing 1,100 tons of gunpowder and weapons which caused a massive explosion.

That is the event of the Bandung Lautan Api, which will always be remembered by the citizens of 

Bandung.
